Introduction-Jaagriti

While India continues to draw the attention of the world as the second most fastest growing economy of the world, the condition of the construction workers in Indiaremains pathetic. India has more than 3 million odd construction workers. These workers are one of the most vulnerable segments of the society. Their lives are characterized by temporary housing, lack of basic amenities and inadequate welfare facilities etc. More disheartening is the condition of their Children, who have no access to basic nutrition, healthcare and primary education facilities.

Dwarka (India), Asia’s largest sub-city has witnessed tremendous rise in infrastructure activities in the past few years. Consequently, there have been sprawling settlements of construction workers in the city. Hence, with intent to impart a productive direction to the lives of these people, PROJECT JAAGRITI was started in February 2009 with the following objectives:

  • To generate awareness and consciousness about the importance and benefits of education, healthcare and nutrition so that these are taken-up as a choice and not coercion.
  • To provide basic elementary education to the children of construction workers.
  • To provide skill based training to children through regular drawing, writing, singing, dancing etc. classes and develop life-long skills and talents in the children.
  • To establish a bond of love, affection and trust between the children, their parents and the volunteers.

Why the name Jaagriti?

Project Jaagriti is not just about awakening the poor and making them grow into a successful citizen of this country. But it is also about awakening and making aware the privileged youth of the society about how a small step could make a meaningful and productive difference to the lives of the poor. Through this the project looks forward to motivating the youth, to rise and take every possible step for the benefit of the poor.

Around 30-35 Children including boys and girls, in age group of 5-14 years, are under the care of the project and are provided with regular education, nutrition and skill-based trainings. With just few months into the project, Project Jaagriti has made substantial progress which includes:

  • Regular non-formal education classes for the children (6 days a week and 2-3 hours each day).
  • Admission of 14 Children in a nearby primary government school in Dwarka.
  • Development of drawing, theatre and dance skills and improvement of learning habits of the Children.
  • Health check of the children.

The Project Jaagriti movement, initially started with just 2 volunteers has now grown to a team of more than 8-10 young, talented and self-motivated volunteers fromdifferent backgrounds along with more than 100 supporters from all over the world, who have a passion to contribute to a change and do good for their society.

In the near future, Project Jaagriti looks forward to organize a host of activities which includes:

  • Regular education classes for the Children along with skill based trainings and workshops.
  • Admission of all the Children into the Regular School Education Program (RSEP)
  • Organization of Picnics, Health Camps and Screening of Educational Movies for the Children at Jaagriti.
  • Organization of regular fund raising and old clothes and stationary collection drives for the benefit of the Children.

We look forward for your support in development of these poor children and to make them rise and become successful citizens of our country INDIA.
