| AID Pehal - AID Delhi school adoption program |
|
A new chapter was added to project Pehal, when two schools were adopted in Shalimar Bagh. In light of this transition now project Pehal is a large scale program and known as AID Delhi School Adoption Program. Please read on to know more about this new initiative......... AID Delhi has successfully ventured into a new arena where it has penetrated into the existing education system with an underlying aim to fix all the loopholes that act as a barrier in delivering quality education to students. In order to bridge the knowledge and opportunity and divide, we have focused on students that receive formal education as well as those who don’t. The objectives of this program are:
The program utilises the existing government infrastructure and resources and is currently implemented in two MCD schools located in Shalimar Bagh, Delhi. In total, 270 children are being taught by 7 teachers, maintaining the teacher-student ratio of ~ 1: 40. We are intervening at three levels, mainly at Students, Teachers and Parents level.
AID Delhi has been supporting non formal education initiatives in various parts of National Capital Region (NCR) Delhi for several years. Our experiences from mainstreaming children living in slum areas made us realize that it's not good enough to send children to school. We also have to improve the standards of schools especially the free ones (Government and MCD) to achieve the desired levels of literacy in India. We hope AID Delhi school adoption program will provide a major thrust in implementation of Right to Education in it's true spirit by providing end to end solution i.e. starting from initiating slum children into education -> mainstreaming them -> improving the schools where they are sent.
Monthly budget : Rs. 20,000 per month (7 teacher's salary and stationary) Currently we have a deficit of Rs. 5000 pm.

27th May 2010 ------------------- Few months back Pehal was initiated as a non-formal education initiative. In May 2010 it has grown into a full fledged school adoption program. Read on about it's genesis....
AID PEHAL is an AID DELHI initiative based in Shalimar Bagh, New Delhi. We provide non -formal education to a groupof children who belong to the families of the construction workerscurrently involved in a construction project taking place in thelocation. A small room in one of the semi constructed buildings in thesite is made into a classroom, where a properly trained teacher, givesthem basic education essential for survival. Inaddition to basic knowledge, we provide to them skill building classes, where painting and dancing sessions are held once a week. These areaimed towards empowering them and making them self dependent and noless than other children who would make it to future India. These children, however, have been observed to be weak in terms of health and presence of basic warm clothing. We now aim towards providing them withwarm clothing, and hold health, dental and nutrition camps for them. Our journey with the kids of pehal has just initiated and we dream to makethis beginning a successful one with the aid of AID India and Pehal change makers.
